No decision on PNM chairman

THE PNM has made no decision about who will replace Franklin Khan as party chairman. Speaking with journalists following yesterday’s PNM General Council meeting at Balisier House, Acting party chairman John Donaldson said there were no discussions on this matter at the meeting which was the first for 2006.

"That will be dealt with at a later date," he stated. Donaldson, who is PNM vice chairman, said the party’s constitution deals with matters such as these but has no special provision regarding the replacement of the political leader.

Khan resigned as party chairman and works and transport minister last year after bribery charges were made against him. PNM stalwarts have called on the party to elect a new chairman and said this would be better than having Donaldson serve out the remainder of Khan’s five-year term. Khan was elected chairman at the PNM’s Annual Convention in Chaguaramas in December 2003.

Khan and Eric Williams, who resigned as energy minister on January 8 as a result of bribery charges, did not attend yesterday’s General Council meeting.

Both men have maintained their innocence and have remained as the Members of Parliament for Ortoire/Mayaro and Port-of-Spain South respectively.
