Crown Point smooth in Santa Rosa gallop

HORSE Of the Year contender Crown Point had a smooth gallop at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, yesterday morning as trainers stepped up preparations for Saturday’s third day of racing this year. The Tobago-bred son of Freshly Squeezed/ Bands O’Gold, winner of his last start, the First Citizens Caribbean Championship over 1800 metres, apparently relishing the sloppy conditions, covered 400 metres in 25 seconds flat. And speedster Salsa Moves zipped along the same distance in a handy 27 seconds. There was a lot to like about the manner in which Sunday Jewel and Sequin, both from the Grant Lourenco barn, went about their gallop on a chilly and breezy morning. This pair rattled through a 1000 metres gallop and looked very fresh at the end of it, being timed in a healthy one minute 02.71 seconds.

Salute The Colours showed some dash in his run over the same 1000 metres trip in one minute 08.75 seconds. Top Of The Class, one of the other two contenders for the Horse of the Year title, looked full of himself in a 1000 metres run out in one minute 11.22 seconds. On Sunday morning, Hello Yankee showed he was very fleet of foot in a gallop with Jamaican-bred Latonia, covering the trip in 48.36 seconds. And three-year-old Bluff Bid stopped the clock in 49.82 seconds together with Dusk Till Dawn. But the two-year-old king, now turned three All For Java, showed he has not lost a step in clocking 37.59 seconds for a 600 metres spin in company with stablemates Sing The Blues and Greek Princess.

Lekh Raj displayed his speed in a 600 metres gallop timed in 36.77 seconds, while Bellimiso stepped the same distance in 37.07 seconds. American-bred five-year-old mare Ascot Kate skated through 600 metres in a very good 36.20 seconds. And Millionaire was timed in 37.63 seconds over a 600 metres gallop. Speedy Fearless Angel stepped lively over 400 metres in 23.36 seconds, while Classico and Zillmer clocked 23.42 seconds for a similar trip, while Dancing Tan Tan and Bravely Spoken clocked 24.97 seconds.
