Abilene meet today at Valsayn
ABILENE Track and Field Club has called a meeting of past members today from 2 pm at the Valsayn Teachers’ College, Spring Village in Curepe. Top item on the agenda will be plans to honour former outstanding Trinidad and Tobago runner Dr Cliff Bertrand who participated in the Olympic Games of 1960 (Rome) and 1964 (Tokyo). A 200 and 400 metres specialist, Dr Bertrand recently retired as head athletics coach of New York University in the USA. He was also a founding member of Abilene. According to Keith Subero, also a founding member of the Arima based club, this year marks the 43rd anniversary of the organisation which has produced several star athletes over the years. Subero said he has already compiled a list of about 300 past members and he is interested in getting them all to attend the meeting today. Apart from unearthing and nurturing track and field talent, Abilene has afforded the star performers with athletics scholarships to study in the US. Among those who have benefitted are Ainsley Armstrong, Winston Short and Lennox Yearwood among others.
