One dead in smash-up at Arima

ONE MAN was killed and three others hospitalised following a two-vehicle smash-up on the Eastern Main Road, Arima around midday yesterday. The accident occurred when friends were returning from a beach lime at Manzanilla. Dead is Allan Huyghew 25 of Building 12, Apartment 4-2 of Maloney Gardens, Maloney. In critical condition is Alfredo Huyghew 29, driver, of Bypass Road, Arima. According to police reports,  at about 12 noon yesterday, a white Hyundai driven by Alfredo Huyghew was travelling west along the Eastern Main Road, Arima, when he over took another vehicle also travelling west in the vicinity of Aripo and collided head on into a white Hilux Toyota vehicle driven by Anthony Williams heading to Sangre Grande. Williams suffered minor injuries.


Allan Huyghew, who  was a passenger in the back seat of the Hyundai died on the spot. The other injured passengers were taken out by motorists and passengers and rushed to the Arima District Hospital. They received medical attention and were transferred to the Port-of- Spain General Hospital, where they were all warded. Police reported that Allan’s windpipe was cut and he received other injuries to his body. The other three passengers received multiple injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies. It was reported that the driver, Alfredo, was in critical condition yesterday evening. District Medical Officer Dr. Vinod Mahabir viewed the body and ordered its removal to the Arima mortuary, from where it will be taken to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, today for post mortem. For the year thus far, 15 people have died in vehicular accidents. Cpl Ali of the Arima Police Station is continuing inquiries.
