Guyana whip defiant Jamaica
ST CATHERINE: Jamaica staged a gallant fight back yesterday but they still fell to Guyana by 51 runs on the final day of their Carib Beer Series match at Chedwin Park. Set 334 to win after Guyana had carried their overnight 114 for six to 163 all out, Jamaica embarked on a frenetic run chase but were dismissed for 282 in the end. West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels led the home team’s charge with an attacking 81 from 97 balls, with eight fours and one six while Darren Powell bolstered the lower order with a cameo 57 from 67 balls, with five fours. Captain Wavell Hinds hit 47 off 60 balls with four fours and opener Chris Gayle, who scored a duck in the first innings, chipped in with 41 from 66 balls, with two fours and a six. Jamaica, needing an outright win, to stay in the competition, suffered an early setback when they lost Donovan Pagon for two with the score on 27. But Samuels and Gayle added 76 for the second wicket before the latter fell with the score on 103. Hinds and Powell shared a crucial 49-run stand for the ninth wicket before Hinds was run out by Shivnarine Chanderpaul to effectively end Jamaica’s resistance. Off spinner Narsingh Deonarine finished with four for 64 while leg spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo claimed three for 93. Earlier, Chanderpaul took his overnight unbeaten 34 to 63 not out, to finish the match with a half-century in each innings. Powell finished with three for 46 while Gareth Breese (two for 10) and Samuels (two for 50) claimed two wickets each.
