Army eke out n-ball win
CHAMPIONS Defence Force eked out a 44-42 victory over Fire to leap into second on the standings of the Alternative Division in this year’s Courts All Sectors Netball League. And lowly Cilnetres got only their second victory in six matches when they edged Police 44-41 in the other clash in the division played at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Arena on Thursday afternoon. The Army-Coast Guard women led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter, and were still ahead 23-18 at the halfway stage. But Fire closed strongly in the third periods to trail 32-30, but their desperate rally was safely held by Defence Force to the end. Goal-shoot Kerlene Sylvester scored 40 goals from 53 attempts, and Donna Elise Charles got four of seven for the winners, while Adasha Norton had 25 goals, Kathleen Antoine scored 12 while T’Shura Smart recorded five for Fire. The lead in the second match changed from quarter to quarter, with Police leading 16-11 at the end of the first, while Cilnetres outscored their rivals 16-5 in the second period for a 27-21 half time lead. Police took the lead 34-33 at the end of the third stanza, but Cilnetres were not to be denied, and with good defensive work while scoring 11 goals to the policewomen’s seven, they walked off victors. Jesselle Navarro had 27 goals from her 41 attempts and Joycelyn Marcelle made 17 of 27 for Cilnetres, while Claudia Joseph netted 30 of 41 attempts, Giselle Norton, seven of 12, and Cathy Ann Cain, four of nine for the losers.
