Drowned schoolboy was sexually assaulted
POLICE investigations into the discovery of New Grant schoolboy Dane Andrews’ body in a caiman-infested pond turned into horror for the family yesterday. Police revealed that the boy had been sexually assaulted, and then possibly murdered. Investigations into Andrews’ death took a new twist, as detectives suspect that the Standard Five schoolboy was buggered and then thrown in the pond. A search of the district at Monkey Town Branch Second Trace, New Grant, was conducted for clues by a party of senior homicide detectives who said the incident could be compared to the infamous Akiel Chambers case. Andrews’ body was fished out of the pond on Thursday morning after the boy failed to return to his New Grant home after school on Wednesday. He attended New Grant Government Primary School. Yesterday, police conducted house-to-house interviews with Monkey Town Branch Trace villagers to confirm initial reports that Andrews had gone to the pond with three other boys (not schoolmates), for a swim. Andrews’ mother, Avril, 35, expressed shock over the trek to the pond, and said her son had never been late home from school. The pond is located about three miles off the New Grant Main Road, south-west of the Andrews’ residence. Suspicions about the drowning were expressed by crime scene detectives, when Andrews’ underwear was found on the bank of the pond by his uncle, Selwyn Dyer. The uncle went in search of the boy with villagers on Wednesday. Pieces of other clothing — including vests and short pants — were scattered around the pond. An autopsy performed on Andrews’ body at the Forensic Science Centre yesterday revealed that death was due to asphyxiation consistent with drowning. The report also stated that Andrews had been sexually assaulted.
