School netballers impress


PARTICIPATION in sports will always be beneficial for the holistic development of young people said Manchoon Sooknanan, Schools Supervisor III, Caroni Education Division.


He was delivering the feature address at the formal opening ceremony of the National Primary Schools Netball League and the Caroni Primary Schools Netball League at Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva on Thursday.


The function could only be described as "impressive" by all who attended.


"In other words a healthy mind could only be the result of a healthy body," Sooknanan said.


He told the scores of netballers that the sport is one discipline that encourages team spirit, discipline, and co-operation.


"It should be pursued with vigour and vitality so that participants would be exposed to the possibility of gaining international recognition," Sooknanan said.


He praised the sponsors of the National League (National Aids Co-ordinating Council), and Caroni Primary Schools Netball League (Ramsingh’s Sports World) and said their support was highly appreciated by the Ministry of Education.


Claire Matthias, schools supervisor II, Caroni, welcomed the guest schools to the Caroni Education Division and said that the Ministry of Education recognised the importance of sports as part of the school curriculum.


"And because of this we have been laying a great deal of emphasis on such extra-curricular activities which have the capacity to develop skills hitherto unexplored among the young children in the country," Matthias said.


Exchange Roman Catholic and Enterprise Government tied in the march past contest among the Caroni Schools followed by another tie — Charlieville Presbyterian and Jerningham Government with Lendore Hindu next.
