Trini jailed for 25 years in US
A Tunapuna man who is on the Trinidad and Tobago police wanted list, has been sentenced by a United States judge to 25 years to life in prison on heroin trafficking charges. Gene Hospedales, 46, was held by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in Queens, New York, on Carnival Saturday last year with two kilogrammes of heroin. He was charged with importing the drug into the US for the purpose of distribution. Hospedales was recently sentenced and is now incarcerated at the Queen’s County Jail. When he is finished serving that sentence, the TT Police Service will be waiting to arrest him on firearm possession charges. Hospedales and his common-law wife, Betty Dominique, were arrested at their St Vincent Street home in Tunapuna in October 2004. They were charged with possession of firearms by Constable O’Neil of the Tunapuna Police Station. The matter was called at the Tunapuna Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning, and only Dominique was in attendance. When Magistrate Melville Daniel was apprised of the situation with Hospedales, he issued a warrant for his arrest. Dominique’s matter will be heard separately, and has been adjourned to June 1.
