Woodbrook residents: Don’t stop the fetes!

The Woodbrook Residents Committee issued a press release yesterday stating that it has no intention to stop the Soca Broadway fetes at the National Stadium. However, the committee wants to advise the promoters of the various Carnival events at the all-inclusive venue to stage their events in a way that ensures that the noise level is kept within the stipulated decibel level legally permitted.

The committee noted that the Environmental Man-agement Authority (EMA) took samples on four separate weekends, and on each occasion the decibel level was violated. In addition, the committee noted that fireworks had been set off on two consecutive weekends at 2.30 am, which made matters worse.

The committee is requesting that the following guidelines be observed:

1. That the permitted decibel level not be violated.

2. That the police wrecker be on duty to remove cars parked in residents’ gateways without their permission, and on the sidewalks and curbs.

3. That a strong police patrol be maintained for two hours after the fete on the streets near the fete venues, particularly when large crowds attend the fete.

According to a release issued by the EMA yesterday, stadium officials of the Soca Broadway are prepared to work alongside them to ease the affected residents of Woodbrook from excessive noise.

Representatives of the National Stadium met with the EMA on Thursday to discuss urgent proposals to control noise emanating from the Soca Broadway venue.

The release also noted that a Notice of Violation (NOV) was issued to the Hasely Crawford Stadium authorities after four events held at the venue were in breach of the Noise Pollution Control Rules (NPCR), 2001.

Stadium officials have agreed to hire a consultant who will be monitoring the noise levels at Soca Broadway.

Should there be a breach of the NPCR, the event’s promoters will be immediately informed to ensure that they comply.

The EMA’s environmental inspectors will be continuing to monitor events at the site, according to the release.

National Stadium representatives were also informed that meetings have been held with senior officials of the Police Service and the EMA.

The EMA stated that this was primarily to ensure co-ordination between the EMA’s inspectors and members of the Police Service with respect to action which can be legitimately taken by the two bodies.
