Lawrence scores for Wrexham

CARDIFF: Wrexham reaffirmed their promotion credentials with a fine 2-0 win against English League Two football leaders Wycombe yesterday.

The Dragons took the lead in the 12th minute when big centre-half, Trinidad and Tobago’s Dennis Lawrence headed home Matt Crowell’s near-post corner.

They extended their advantage three minutes later with Crowell again the provider, setting up on-loan Aston Villa striker Sam Williams who headed the second.

Wycombe seemed sluggish as Wrexham continued to boss the match and Juan Ugarte saw his shot pushed away eight minutes before the break.

Roger Johnson then had to make two clearances in a minute as the Dragons pushed forward, before Simon Spender should have made it three just after the interval.

Wycombe rallied in the second half but they were unable to test Mike Ingham, who had an easy afternoon in the Wrexham goal.

Even when the leaders went with three up front they were unable to make inroads into the Dragon’s stout defending.

Jim Whitley could have made it 3-0 late on but was denied by a fine save by Matt Duke.
