Nero, McShine top schools 5K
GERVIN NERO of Fatima College repeated as winner of the Guardian General National Schools 5K road race in Port-of-Spain yesterday. Nero took charge of the race moments after the start and left a large field of approximately 300 runners in his trail. However the race was hampered by competitors unintentionally taking the wrong turn from the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. In the end Nero returned a time of 14 minutes and 17 seconds for his victory. When he entered the stadium for the final 300-metres stretch, he had a commanding lead of about 100 metres from his closest rival and brother Sandino Nero. Sandino also completed the race strongly in the runner-up position in a time of 14 minutes and 28 seconds competing for A-Class Tuition. Neil Francois was the third place finisher in 14 minutes and 45 seconds for Hype Laventille Educational Institution. Deus Olivierre of Belmont Boys Secondary completed the top four places in 15:01. Among the women it was dreadlocked Pillar McShine again not surprisingly claiming the top spot in 16:54 for Woodbrook Government Secondary. McShine had literally exhausted all her effort and had to be assisted by officials at the finish. South East Port-of-Spain’s Samantha Shukla did well to stay on the heels of McShine, and copped the silver medal and a trophy at the prizegiving that followed immediately after. Shukla completed the race in 16:58 a mere four-second difference from the winning time.
