Residents ready to protest PM’s proposal

PRESIDENT’S GROUNDS in St Ann’s was a hive of activity yesterday morning as nearby residents prepared to step up their protest over a plan by Prime Minister Patrick Manning to acquire the recreational area for his private use.

The disgruntled residents, who have formed themselves into the St Ann’s, Cascade and Hololo Community Group (SACHCG) to oppose the proposed move, gathered on the grounds from early yesterday to prepare placards.

As if to underscore the residents’ claim that the grounds are the only recreational space in the district, a group was preparing the area for a bazaar scheduled for later in the day and a practice session involving young members of a Football Enhancement School run by the Grassroots St Ann’s Association was in full swing.

Residents claim the President’s Grounds has been a centre of community activity for more than 40 years, used by the Northern Rugby Club and other sports groups.

It had also been used by some of the country’s successful sports personalities, including former TT football captain Clayton Morris and former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop. So far there has been no response from Manning to the residents’ protest over his planned acquisition of the grounds.
