Windwards lead Guyana by 61 runs
ST GEORGE’S: Devon Smith hit a fine half century to keep alive the hopes of the Windward Islands salvaging a draw against Guyana yesterday, penultimate day of the fifth round Carib Beer Series regional cricket match at the Tanteen Recreational Oval. Trailing Guyana on first innings by 87 runs, the Windwards reached 148 for two at stumps yesterday, a lead of 61, after a rain-affected third day’s play. Opener Smith made 63 while Hyron Swallow (34) and Alvin LaFuille (19) were the not out batsmen heading into today’s final day. Guyana, after resuming at 245 for eight, were dismissed for 276, to take an 87-run, first innings lead. Kenroy Peters took four wickets for 43 runs while recalled West Indies spinner Rawl Lewis snapped up three for 81 and Jean Paul finished with two for 21 for the Windwards. In the Guyana first innings Ramnaresh Sarwan made a welcome return to form with a fine 108 with other useful contributions coming from Rayon Griffith (35) and Narsingh Deonarine (30). Guyana are tied on second place with Trinidad and Tobago in the Carib Beer Series standings behind leaders Barbados. Cricket fans will be watching with great interest today as if expected Trinidad and Tobago defeat Barbados and Guyana can force an outright against the Windwards as the top three teams will finish with the same points. But Trinidad and Tobago can claim the trophy by virtue of topping Barbados and gaining first innings against Guyana at Guaracara Park in Pointe-a-Pierre.
