Yorke puts Sydney in ‘semi’

SYDNEY: Trinidad and Tobago’s Dwight Yorke scored a penalty as Sydney FC beat Adelaide United 2-1 on Friday to secure second place in the Hyundai A-League and book a place in the semi finals.

The 34-year old Yorke, stepping up to the spot after Adelaide’s Ross Aloisi handled the ball in the area, delivered a delicate chip that easily beat goalkeeper Daniel Beltrame and gave Sydney a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Parity was restored three minutes later however when Shengqing Qu converted to set up a thrilling end to the encounter at the Aussie Stadium.

Yorke almost scored his second when he was set up by the brilliant Steve Corica but he failed to convert the opportunity.

With the second half being played at a frenetic rate, Alvin Ceccoli produced a stunning 71st minute strike that sealed Sydney’s fortunes, when he launched a beautifully taken free kick into the top left hand corner of the Adelaide goal. Sydney’s triumph set up a home-and-away semi final clash with Adelaide to be contested over the next two weeks. Yorke and company will visit Adelaide’s Hindmarsh Stadium on February 12 for the first leg before returning to the Aussie Stadium for the climax on February 19.
