Warriors hopefuls end US camp

UNITED STATES college striker Darryl Roberts scored in the 77th minute to give a squad of Trinidad World Cup hopefuls a deserved 2-1 victory over Miami-based Honduras 5-Stars in a training match at the Sunrise Hilton Ground, Fort Lauderdale, Miami on Sunday.

It was the second practice match for the 15-man squad during a five-day training camp which ended yesterday.

They eked out a 1-0 triumph over a Florida International University team on Friday last.

Trinidad and Tobago took the lead after only five minutes from the 1 pm (TT 2 pm) kick off on a chilly afternoon.

Anthony Noreiga pounced on a right side corner by Kevon Neaves which was re-directed and he climbed high to head past Honduran 5-Stars goalkeeper Richard Pinevyo.

The Honduran 5-Stars were level on 35 minutes when a mix up between an advancing goalkeeper Williams and Noreiga allowed Eduardo Ravenna to nip in between both and firing into an unguarded net.

Trinidad and Tobago wasted several good goal-scoring opportunities, with Roberts, Noreiga and Kevin Baptiste the culprits.

After a 1-1 half-time scoreline, Soca Warriors trio Silvio Spann, Cyd Gray and Aurtis Whitley replaced Noreiga, Anthony Wolfe and Baptiste

Trinidad and Tobago missed another chance to regain the lead when Whitley shot wide from just outside the penalty area, following good work by Gray and Spann. The Hondurans, made up of ex-national youth players who are in the Copa Latina series and including TT-born Jason Sealey, made life difficult for the Trinidadians and Osman Pavon tested Williams with a free-kick.

And another free-kick, this time by Leovanny Bueso forced Williams into a good save in the 54th minute.

The winner came when a centre from Neaves found Whitley who flicked a pass to Roberts whose shot was only partially stopped by the goalkeeper who saw the ball trickle over the line.

Beenhakker will announce a provisional squad of 30 players this week and later shave it to a 20-man squad for the friendly international against Iceland on Carnival Tuesday, February 28, in London. Meanwhile, Rougier is headed to London, England for a tryout with an English Premiership club.

The TT team yesterday: Jan Michael Williams, Nigel Henry, Atiba Charles, Julius James, Anthony Noreiga, Kerry Baptiste, Osei Telesford, Kevon Neaves, Anthony Wolfe, Anthony Rougier, Darryl Roberts.

Errol McFarlane was not considered due to a groin strain.
