Witness completes testimony in taxi driver’s killing

A young man yesterday told Justice Devan Rampersad he was in a field of marijuana and peppers which he had planted, when his brother told him that the police came to arrest him for murder.

Joshua Ramnath also admitted that when he walked out of the field with his brother, the police were waiting to arrest him in connection with the murder of taxi driver/electrician Elwyn Sampson.

Ramnath, who was 15 years old at the time, and took part in Sampson’s murder, was granted immunity for the crime.

He completed his testimony yesterday against murder accused Ramzan Bachan, also called Tazmool. Bachan is before Rampersad in the Port-of-Spain Third Criminal court charged with the February 21 2001 murder of Sampson. Bachan, 24, of Gopie Hill Trace, Union Village, Mayaro, is being represented by attorneys Larry Williams and Celeste Jules, while State prosecutors are Kathy Ann Waterman-Latchoo and Shoba Jamunath.

Also giving evidence yesterday was Diann Jones, who was a passenger in the taxi when it was hijacked by Bachan, Ramnath and Daniel Goolcharan. Hearing continues today.
