Young WI up against Bangladesh

COLOMBO: West Indies Under-19s will seek to compensate for their already failed ICC Youth World Cup bid when they clash with Bangladesh today in the Super League play-off semi-final at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.

Aiming to repeat their heroics from their last tournament when they reached the final, the West Indies met disappointment when they bowed out at the quarter-final stage last Saturday, after losing to title-favourites India by 126 runs.

The regional side will be fancying their chances against Bangladesh who, after their impressive showing in the preliminaries to finish at the top of Group, were humbled by England in their quarter-final match up.

Coach Roddy Estwick told CMC Sports that since bowing out of the tournament’s main draw, the management team had met with the side in an effort to keep them focused for the upcoming fixture.

"We are going to try and get the boys up and ready for that. There are still international games (to be played)," Estwick said.

"There are still two games really left, the plate semi-final and the plate final so hopefully we can get into the plate final and go on to win that."

Estwick said despite the disappointment of going out of the main draw, he did not foresee any problems with the players lacking motivation.

"Anytime you are playing for the West Indies I don’t think it should be that difficult to motivate anyone," Estwick surmised.

"There are teams like South Africa and Bangladesh still left in the competition so hopefully we can do the best we can." West Indies have batted well throughout the competition and will once again look to their batsmen to give them the advantage in the encounter. Right-handed, top-order batsman Jason Mohammed finished the competition as the leading run-scorer after the preliminary stage with 178 runs from his three innings while opener William Perkins was second on the run-scoring list with164 runs.
