The Salaries Review Commission is recommending a compensation package for the Prime Minister, subject to tax, of $48,000. He currently receives $26,000. Sources said the report also recommended an increased compensation package for the Chief Justice of approximately $64,000 a month tax-free. In respect of ministers, the 67th Report of the SRC advised an enhanced compensation package of $45,000 a month, subject to usual statutory deductions, it is understood. Ministers currently receive a compensation package of approximately $30,000. The report recommended an increase in the compensation package of judges to $55,000 a month, tax-free, sources said. The report, which went before Cabinet yesterday, is expected to be tabled in the House of Representatives today. According to sources, the recommendation is that the compensation package of the Opposition Leader be enhanced to approximately $38,000 a month. The report recommended that Members of Parliament without portfolio receive a basic salary of $14,000 plus allowances. In the case of Members of the House of Representatives and for Members of the Senate — $10,500 plus allowances. Only on Tuesday UNC Senator Wade Mark called on Government to table and implement the SRC report. He complained that even though the recommendations had been completed some time ago, Government was breaking the law by not tabling the document. Mark called for Parliament committee members to be compensated for their time. He was supported by Independent Senator Eastlyn McKenzie who noted that Members of Parliament were reluctant to speak about enhancing their compensation package. According to sources, the recommendation is that committee members receive $1,000 a month for their efforts. Under the Constitu-tion, it makes recommendations for the higher echelons of the Public Service as well as for all public office holders and members of the Judiciary. According to the law, Government has to table the report without amendments. The Parliament can accept, reject it, or modify it.
