Derby County keen on signing Yorke
LONDON: English Championship club Derby County are discussing the possibility of signing Trinidad and Tobago captain Dwight Yorke, at the end of the Hyundai A-League season in March. The 34-year-old Yorke, whose services are currently engaged by Sydney FC, will become available after March 5 and the relegation-threatened Derby are mulling over signing the experienced hit man. "Dwight Yorke has been offered to us and he has been spoken about," Derby boss, Terry Westley told the Evening Telegraph. "A player like that is obviously someone you do look at because he’s played at the top level in this country and can certainly play at Championship level." He added: "He needs to keep himself fit for the World Cup. He’s not due back for a couple of weeks yet because he’s finishing his obligations in Australia." "I’d imagine there’ll be a lot of clubs interested in talking to him. We’re interested too but it is a bit of a long shot." Yorke, who left Birmingham City in the English Premiership at the end of last season to join Sydney FC, recently led TT to qualification for the World Cup in Germany, after breaking his international retirement. He has scored several goals for Sydney this season that has helped them to the semi-finals of the A-League competition. However, with the A-League finishing in March, Yorke will be without match competition ahead of the World Cup finals which kick off in June. Derby are languishing near the bottom of the table and are involved in a fight to avoid relegation.
