Nepal upset South African Under-19s
COLOMBO: South Africa, beaten by the West Indies in the preliminary stage of the ICC Under 19 World Cup, suffered further embarrassment yesterday when they lost to minnows Nepal in the Plate semi-final by two runs. Batting first at the Nondescripts Cricket Club, Nepal finished with a moderate total of 214 for eight with opener Kanishka Chaugai top-scoring with 59 and Gyanendra Malla getting 46. Medium pacer Paul Siboto finished with four for 47 while left arm spinner Jean Symes grabbed three for 15. In their turn at the crease, South Africa were restricted to 212 for five off their 50 overs, despite Dean Elgar's unbeaten 66 from 65 balls. Romano Ramoo got 38 and Pieter Daneel, 32 but South Africa were denied by miserly bowling from Nepal's bowlers, led by left arm seamer Basanta Regmi who finished with three for 31. Nepal will now face New Zealand in the Plate Championship tomorrow. At the Sinhalese Sports Club, hosts Sri Lanka turned in an impressive display to beat Zimbabwe by eight wickets in the Super League play-off semi-final. Chasing the 256 for eight in 50 overs made by Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka mounted a fine challenge to overhaul their target at 259 for two off 47.2 overs. Sri Lanka will now meet Bangladesh in the Super League play-off final on Saturday.
