Merry Boys, Comet in Sunday League final
CERAMIC MERRY Boys and Alescon Comet will compete in the final of the Carib Sunday League cricket competition on March 18. In yesterday’s semifinal round, Merry Boys crushed Queen’s Park by nine wickets at the Northerns Ground, Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Sain while CLICO Preysal hammered Alescon Comet by eight wickets at Gilbert Park, Couva. The Parkites were restricted to 183 runs for nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs with player/coach Vasbert Drakes unbeaten on 43 while Ricardo Paty was on the other end with 23. West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Kieron Pollard also notched 32 for Queen’s Park while, bowling for Merry Boys, former Trinidad and Tobago fast bowler Marlon Black captured three wickets for 32 runs while current national pacer Richard Kelly took two for 36. The Merry Boys title chase was never under threat, despite a bout of cramps which forced opener Mario Belcon to retire on 50. His opening partner, TT’s Lendl Simmons, like Kelly, warmed up for this weekend’s "Test" between West Indies and England "A’ teams with an undefeated 73 while ex-national Lincoln Roberts was 42 when victory was achieved. The opening pair of Kwesi Roy and Kyron Lynch wrecked the Comet batting, with Roy claiming four for 26 and Lynch four for 40 as Comet were skittled for 82 in 27.3 overs. TT’s Imran Khan topscored with 27 while Guyanese Travis Dowlin added 15. In response, Preysal reached 86 for two in 14.5 overs with Satish Naidoo not out on 42 while fellow opener David Livingston tallied 38. West Indies Player Association (WIPA) president, leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine copped two for 17 for Comet.
