Clarke Road edge Mayo in nail-biter


ALAN MAHABIR hit a boundary off the last ball to guide FCB Clarke Road to a nail-biting three-wicket win over Mayo Valley Boys in the second round Group "D" clash in the Carib Shield 20-overs competition yesterday.


Chasing 104, Clarke Road needed 11 runs off the final over, and four off the final ball. Mahabir kept his cool to guide the visitors to victory (104 for seven) at Union Hall.


Guyanese Damodar Dasrath top scored for Clarke Road with 30 while national batsman Gregory Mahabir added 28, with Denzil Hall claiming four wickets for nine runs for Mayo.


Earlier in the afternoon, Cliff Sampson scored 31 and Tyrone Jacob 29 as Mayo posted 103 for five, with Darius Gunness copping two for 20.


Meanwhile, the other six matches on the schedule finished yesterday with wins for Queen’s Park (29 runs) and Ceramic Merry Boys (70 runs) in Group "A", Alescon Comet (eight wickets) and Joe Public Munroe Road (58 runs) in Group "B", W Connection Wanderers (109 runs) in Group "C" and PowerGen Sports (29 runs) in Group "D".


Trinidadian-born Barbadian off-spinner Ryan Austin took two for four while Rishaad Harris had one for seven as the Parkites restricted Invaders Sports to 84 for five, in pursuit of 114, at the St Mary’s Ground, St Clair. Ex-national all-rounder Robert Mahabir scored 22 for Invaders.


Defence Force were hardly in with a chance to defeat Merry Boys at Chaguaramas, as they reached 111 for five in response to Merry Boys 181 for four.


Ex-TT spinner Ken Hazel grabbed three for nine for Merry Boys while Kerwin Gonzales notched 39 and Seon Cain 23 for the Army/Coast Guard combination. Set a victory target of 83 against British American Aranguez Sports, Comets reached 87 for two in 14.1 overs with Guyanese Travis Dowlin unbeaten on 36 and TT’s Imran Khan adding 20.


After scoring 154 for four on Wednesday, Munroe Road restricted hosts Las Lomas to 96 for five with Ancil Bhaggan taking two for 12. Stephen Alphonso (22), Anthony Phillip (21 not out) and Gavri Ramlogan (20) were the leading scorers for Las Lomas.


Former national pacer Theodore Modeste claimed three wickets as Endeavour struggled to 79 for nine against Wanderers at Gilbert Park, Couva, despite 41 from Sanjay Mahase.


And Couva were dismissed for 114 in 19 overs, in pursuit of 144, against PowerGen at the Couva Junior Secondary Ground.
