England ‘A’, WI Reserves clash
ST JOHN’S: With eyes on possible places in their respective senior teams, the West Indies and England "A" sides meet in the first of two unofficial "Tests," starting at Antigua Recreation Ground today. The four-day match will bring together 16 players who have played Test and several others who have played One-Day Internationals. Captain Sylvester Joseph, batsmen Narsingh Deonarine, Ryan Hinds, Marlon Samuels, wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh Jr, left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed and fast bowlers Jermaine Lawson and Tino Best have worn the maroon colours already. England "A" captain Vikram Solanki, pacers Kabir Ali, Sajid Mahmood and James Anderson, wicket-keeper Chris Read and batsman Owais Shah have played at the Test level. They go into the match knowing that they stand a chance of being selected to represent their country at the highest level if their performances merit it. Both the senior West Indies and England squads are currently touring New Zealand and India respectively. West Indies "A" coach Hendy Springer is under no illusion that his players will have do well against the tourists who warmed up for the match with a comprehensive 262-run win over Antigua and Barbuda on Monday. He bemoaned the fact that his team did not have a practice match and only had two days since arriving in Antigua on Monday to prepare. SQUADS: West Indies— Sylvester Joseph (captain), Lendl Simmons, Siewnarine Chattergoon, Ryan Hinds, Narsingh Deonarine, Marlon Samuels, Carlton Baugh Jr., Richard Kelly, Dave Mohammed, Tino Best, Jermaine Lawson, Andrew Richardson, Dale Richards. England ‘A’ — Vikram Solanki (captain), Kabir Ali, James Anderson, Gareth Batty, Rikki Clarke, Alastair Cook, Jamie Dalrymple, Ed Joyce, Alex Loudon, Sajid Mahmood, Chris Read, Owais Shah, Alex Wharf, Michael Yardy.
