Failure not in Dookeran’s vocabulary
THE EDITOR: I am always very proud to have been a fellow student of Mr Winston Dookeran at University in Canada and to have known him personally. Throughout his University career he was known to set goals which others felt were unreachable, yet he was able to succeed. One of his major accomplishments was to have become the President of the Students Union at the University. Perhaps he may have been the first overseas student to have attempted this. Many thought he was a dreamer and were very skeptical when his name appeared as a candidate. But against all odds he soundly defeated the opponents and made all West Indians proud. Dookeran was an outstanding scholar. He graduated with double honours from the University of Manitoba and later with a Masters degree from the distinguished London School of Economics. For his academic achievements and contribution to society, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Manitoba. He has had a successful career in the Public Service, at UWI, and in politics. To me he achieves whatever he sets out to do. Don’t be fooled by his calm temperament, apparent simplicity, and humility. He is a great thinker, planner and strategist. He is also very patient. If he sets out to be PM and does not make it, it will be the first time that I have known him to fail. But I caution failure is not in his vocabulary. Good luck Winston, and keep up the struggle!
