Williams happy with football award
FORMER Trinidad and Tobago defender Brian Williams has described his success as the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) “Coach of the Year” as “a great achievement and a great award for any coach.” Williams, who was a dread-locked right-back in the legendary Strike Squad and now coach at United Petrotrin in the TT Pro League, guided the club to the League’s “Big Six” crown last November. “With myself as a young, aspiring coach it is a great achievement,” Williams continued. “I’m looking forward to improve and to do my best.” “My objective is to work with one of the national teams,” he said regarding his goals for the upcoming season and beyond.
“I assisted with the national teams in the past and now, as I’m a little more experienced I think I might be in a better position to do a better job with the national teams,” he said. “So the award is a great one, it adds to your resume, to your achievements and I’ll just love coaching and will just continue from there.” Williams said he always tells his players that he would like to work with those who really want to be top footballers. “So I always say to young players — take your time, try and learn your trade properly and the sky is the limit. And they’ll get there.” Another delighted award recipient was Kennya Cordner, who was voted as the “Female Player of the Year.” The 17-year-old, who is a member of St Clair’s Coaching School in Bon Accord, Tobago, is a top striker in the national Under-20 squad.
“I feel good. It’s the first time that a Tobagonian is the female Player of the Year.... at such a young age,” she said. The pint-sized teenager noted that her achievement is extremely special due to the lack of female footballers in the sister isle. “It feels good because, normally, as a Tobagonian, football is not really a big thing over there and you’ll have to come down to Trinidad and really pick up the game,” she admitted. And she is hoping to improve her skills during the coming season. “I think I can improve my game and be a role model to my teammates because I have great ability in the game,” she said.
