Among lowly hyenas

THE EDITOR: Looking back at the UNC rally on Sunday February 19, Winston Dookeran emerges as a giant among small men, a lotus in the mud of drunkenness and fanaticism and a true leader for a nation among egotistic power-grabbers.

He knew he was entering the den, not of majestic lions, but of lowly hyenas, but in the fashion of a true hero, he faced the challenge with Excalibur held high, irrespective of the consequences. No mamaguy for the fanatics about how much he loved them, no exploitation of their illiteracy, ignorance and illogic, but armed with the simple truth that there must be a politics for all of the people, not merely some, based on honesty, integrity and sound management.

Boy, did such truth hurt! The common herd screamed, the sycophants rolled up their eyes, and the great betrayers and pretenders at the head table giggled the giggle and laughed the laugh of men in darkness mesmerised by light. But Dookeran’s truth, powerful as it is, is a mere candle in the overwhelming darkness of disguise, deceit and sheer devilry which surrounds him. Not unless the true patriots of this country young and old, rich and poor, from every creed and race, rise from their slumber and become the fuel that transforms this candle into a conflagration, lighting up the world of TT and consuming its darkness.
