58 MURDERS IN 59 DAYS

WHILE thousands celebrated Carnival throughout the country yesterday, Trinidad recorded its 57th and 58th murders with the death of two Diego Martin men 15 hours apart.

Dead are Mark McIntosh, 20, of Blue Basin, Diego Martin, and Jerome Watson, 20, of Water Wheel Road, Diego Martin.

Four people were murdered during the two days of Carnival.

According to reports, officers of the West End police Station responded to reports of gunshots at Northwest Road, Patna Village, Diego Martin at 2.30 pm. On investigating, they found McIntosh’s body in a drain at the southern side of the Patna Village Recreation Ground.

He had been shot in the head.

Police suspect he was followed from a nearby pub after an altercation with a man, and have no motive for the murder.

At about 9.30 pm on Monday night, the West End police responded to reports of a shooting at Savannah Road 2, Bagatelle, Diego Martin. They found the body of a man, later identified as Watson, in a car with three bullet wounds in the right side of his neck. He also had multiple stab wounds in the back.

Officers could not pinpoint a motive for the murder, but father of the dead man, retired constable Jerome Watson (Snr), believes his son may have been killed due to a recent confrontation with a man over the sale of a defective sparkplug. The father also suspected the killing may have been in connection with a girl with whom the victim was involved.

The dead man’s father called for more legislation to DNA and forensic testings to be done in murder investigations.

According to reports, after spending Carnival Monday at home, Watson drove into St James to fix a flat tyre, stopped to purchase food and dropped his girlfriend at C-Trace, Bagatelle. He was on the way home when he was killed.

Visiting the scenes were Snr Supt Roach, Supt Millington, Insp Lezama, Sgts Dan, Seepersad and Kennedy, members of the Western Division Task Force and the Northern Homicide Bureau.

PC Lodher is investigating the murder of McIntosh, while PC Montrichard is investigating Watson’s murder.

Two murders were recorded in the Chaguanas area on Carnival Monday, which brought the total to 55 and 56 respectively.
