UWI police block students
Protesting students, clad in red shirts, tried to push their way into the JFK auditorium where the meeting was being held but were thwarted by a large contingent of campus security officers. The students claimed the meeting was an illegal attempt to change the guild constitution ahead of guild elections in April.
They also claimed the guild has done nothing to address issues such as crime on campus and has misappropriated funds.
However, guild president Fallon Lutchmansingh dismissed all these claims as political propaganda and attempts by persons with national political affliations to pollute guild politics.
She reiterated that the guild has been transparent about its intentions to reform the constitution and constitutional reform “does not happen overnight.” The new constitution was approved at the meeting and the protesting students said they will now explore their legal options.
