Cleo gets shot put bronze
The 27-year-old, like Burns and Daniel, copped a bronze medal, this time in the women’s shot put.
In her fifth attempt, Borel-Brown recorded a distance of 17.87 metres which saw her climb the rostrum to meet gold medallist Valerie Vili of New Zealand, who had a Games record of 19.66m, and Vivian Chukwuemeka of Nigeria, who threw 18.25m in her first try.
Tobago-born Sherridan Kirk booked a spot in today’s 800m final after winning the first round heat three, in the first round, in one minute 49.11 seconds.
Melissa De Leon was eliminated in heat five of the women’s 800m first round, after placing fourth (out of five entrants) in a slow time of 2:06.04.
Aaron Armstrong was the only national sprinter to progress beyond the second round in the men’s 200m. The 29-year-old finished third in heat two in 20.78 seconds. Kevon Pierre ran fourth in heat four in 21.36 while Julieon Raeburn placed seventh in heat three in 21.35.
In the first round, Armstrong was second in heat one in 20.66, Pierre was the runner-up in heat four in 20.92 while Raeburn was third in heat three in 21.00.
A day after earning bronze in the men’s 50m pistol, Daniel finished seventh in the men’s 10m air pistol with 97 points. India’s Samaresh Jung, the 50m pistol winner, added another gold medal to his collection, after amassing 101.4 points, followed by England’s Mick Gault 100.2 points and India’s Vivek Singh 99.6.
Other shooters in action yesterday were Takoor Sankar and Curtis Blunt, who placed 28th and 31st respectively in the men’s 50m rifle prone qualification, and Robert John Auerbach, who was joint 33rd in the men’s trap qualification.
The squash tandem of Joshua Pinard and Colin Ramasra took 19 minutes to beat Peter Christian-Bailey and Rebecca Nobbs of the Norfolk Island 9-7, 9-5, 9-6 in their preliminary round match.
On the other side of the coin, there were also straight-set defeats for Trinidad and Tobago in the badminton arena, with Kerwyn Pantin suffering a 21-10, 21-9 whipping by England’s Aamir Ghaffar in the men’s singles. In the mixed doubles, Canadians Michael Beres and Valerie Loker cruised past Justin Siu and Nekeisha Blake 21-10, 21-10 while Ashley Brehaut and Erin Carroll spanked Anil Seepaul and Kerian Quan Chee 21-12, 21-8.
The national table-tennis squads were beaten in their six first-round encounters.
In the men’s singles, Sri Lanka’s Thilina Piyadasa strolled past Reeza Burke 11-5, 11-3, 12-10, 11-6 and Ryan Jenkins of Wales trounced Aaron Edwards 11-4, 11-8, 11-5, 11-4.
Edwards and Burke were unable to meet the Sri Lankan pair of Piyadasa and Ishara Manikku Babu in the mixed doubles while Edwards’ elder sister Aleena was unable to hold her early lead agaisnt India’s Shamini Kumaresan, as she fell 6-11, 11-7, 11-4, 13-11, 11-8.
In the men’s doubles, Pakistan’s Muhammad Qureshi and Farjad Saif held of Burke and Khaleel Asgarali 8-11, 11-5, 3-11, 11-4, 11-3 while Guyana’s Paul David and Idi Lewis edged Anthony Brown and Curtis Humphreys 11-8, 11-4, 9-11, 7-11, 11-6.
Day eight events today will feature Kirk’s gold medal quest as well as Armstrong’s attempt for a spot in the 200m final while, in shooting, Marsha Bullen-Jones will feature in the women’s 10m air pistol qualification and, in squash, the tandem of Pinard and Ramasra will aim for another win.
