Lost gun and ammunition

Acting Inspector Tota Harricharan reported the incident to the Cedros Police Station and yesterday policemen returned to the Granville beach to search for clues.

Police officers also questioned residents living along the coastline as to whether they had information that could assist them with their investigation.

Harricharan had been ordered to write a report about the incident to Commissioner of Police, Trevor Paul, sources said.

According to a police report, at about 6.30 pm on Saturday Harricharan arrived at the Granville Beach Resort in his private car. The policeman stripped down to his bathing trunks, leaving his Beretta pistol, 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition and his police identification card inside the car, and went for a sea bath .

When he returned an hour later, the report stated, Harricharan discovered that his car had been tampered with, and his gun, ammunition and police ID card were missing. Harricharan went to the Cedros Police Station where he lodged a report. Up to late yesterday police had not recovered the items or made any arrests. Investigations are continuing. Meanwhile, a female security officer lost her loaded revolver in Barrackpore on Saturday after she forgot the gun on the bumper of a company vehicle in which she was travelling.

The incident occurred at about 3 pm, when estate constable Dalia Bereton and another officer, Shah, both attached to Innovative Security Technologies Ltd, were on mobile patrol duty along Papourie Road. The police report stated that Bereton had to stop to deal with an emergency, along Taskar Road at Harripaul Village.

When the female officer got out from the company vehicle, she took out a revolver, which was loaded with six rounds of ammunition, and placed it on the back bumper of the vehicle.

According to the report, the female security guard returned a few minutes later and re-entered the vehicle.

The vehicle, which was driven by Shah, then drove off. It was only on reaching Ghani Village in Debe —almost two miles away — that Bereton remembered that she left her gun on the bumper.

The security officers went back to Taskar Road but came up emptyhanded. Police are continuing investigating.
