Anti-crime groups

This is the aim behind the partnership between the TT Chamber of Industry and Commerce (TTCIC) and TSTT for the expansion of Neighbourhood Crime Watch Programme which was launched yesterday at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Building, Westmoorings. President of the TTCIC, Christian Mouttet said the simple carefree days of our parents and grandparents are gone. He said today, people were using a lot of energy operating with extreme caution, carrying on their daily lives. “That is why watching out for one another, as this programme promotes, must become the mantra which reverberates through every community.”

The Chamber has been involved in the local Neighbourhood Crime Watch (NCW) programme since the 1980s. It was relaunched in 2002 with sponsorship from Guardian General. To date, there are more than 30 NCWs across the country, including Paradise Gardens, Trincity; St Joseph Village, and Calcutta Street, St James.

TSTT has signed a three-year agreement to expand the development of NCWs. It will facilitate the bringing together of legal experts, homeowners, protective services and other specialists to have a programme for the peculiar needs of the community. Residents will be exposed to techniques to “crime proof” their communities. TSTT will also be sponsoring radio and press advertisements about the programme. Devrol Dupigny, of the TTCIC Crime and Justice Committee said the NCW is not meant to disrupt lifestyles but will provide a means for neighbours to meet and decide a common goal—making their communities safer places to live.
