Glorious Sounds Easter concert

The group which involves youths from across Tobago has been delivering inspiring music over the years.

The accomplished musicians were also champions in the 2004 National Music Festival.

Their tenth anniversary celebrations will take place at the LRC Auditorium, UWI, St Augustine, from 7 pm.

Through the efforts of its leader Pastor David Elder, the group’s founder and director, scores of youths have been exposed to weekly musical training in a range of brass and woodwind instruments. This mission was accomplished with the assistance of trainers Roderick Urquhart, former conductor of the TT Police Band, Kerry Cyrus and Police Officer Wayne Nimblette. Through their dedication and hard work, the young musicians emerge on the national scene bringing inspiration to many across the island, at the hospital, senior citizens’ and children’s homes, churches, schools, community centres, and malls.

Glorious Sounds’ lead musician David Elder Jr captured the Junior Wind Instrumentalist championship at the 2002 and 2004 Music Festivals, playing the trumpet, euphonium and tuba. The group also made it to the finals of the just ended 2006 championships in seven classes.

In their efforts to continually enhance their skills, since 1999 Glorious Sounds has been participating in annual summer music workshops conducted by the National Youth Orchestra and by the National Symphonia and the THA Community Development Division (with visiting foreign music professionals) in more recent years.

In 2004 the group made its first and very successful annual Easter Island Tour to Barbados where they performed at churches, on television, in downtown Bridgetown and at the Governor General’s residence. This was followed up last year with a similarly successful tour to St Vincent with the Royal Police Bands joining in city concerts.

Sunday’s concert will feature a range of classical music, majoring in the hymns of the Christian church, the songs of Easter along with a variety contributed by vocal and instrumental artistes. These will include the National Symphonia, Shabbach, Pastor Peter Regis and the St Augustine Chamber Orchestra.
