Man bonded for kidnapping
Kwesi Towine, 22, was charged three years ago with kidnapping boat-builder Don Romain and robbery and aggravation. On March 24, Towine pleaded guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of $50,000, while he awaited sentencing by Justice Rampersad.
On January 25, 2003, Towine and three other men stopped Romain in St James where he was plying his silver Hyundai Accent car for hire. The men got into the car, announced a hold-up and took control of the vehicle. Romain was handcuffed and robbed of $100, a gold ring valued $450 and a silver ring valued at $150.
The four men were later arrested while driving in a northerly direction on St Vincent Street PoS by police officers who were on patrol. The other accused — Antonio Romain (no relation to the victim), Michael Phillip and Ronnie Alexander — opted for summary trials at the Magistrates’ Court and were found guilty.
Justice Rampersad wished to remind the court that the greatest sentencing imposed on one of Towine’s co-accused was three years in prison while Towine has remained in custody for the past three years.
Justice Rampersad said apparently something had gone wrong with the administrative justice. Justice Rampersad also took into consideration a report from Towine’s probation officer.
Justice Rampersad said he would give Towine the benefit of the doubt, that he was not so stupid to threaten the complainant while awaiting sentencing.
Justice Rampersad wished to remind Towine that the purpose of the bond is for him to be of good behaviour. Towine was warned that if for any reason he was found not to be of good behaviour, he would be brought back to court and charged afresh for the act. Attorney-at-law Tricia Hudlin appeared on behalf of the State.
