Cedros man kills relative
EASTER celebrations for a Cedros family were cancelled after a relative was stabbed to death during an altercation with another relative on Saturday night.
Clement Merez, 26, a caretaker at the Icacos Health Centre in Cedros, died from a single stab wound which pierced his heart, police said.
Up to late yesterday a 19-year-old relative was assisting homicide detectives with their investigations.
According to a police report, at about 8 pm on Saturday, Merez and the relative were involved in heated dispute in front of The Ranch bar at Icacos Main Road.
The men engaged in a scuffle and the relative ran off, heading towards his home, police said. Merez pelted several bottles at the relative as he chased after him. The relative ran inside of his house and grabbed a knife, a police report stated. He confronted Merez on his front step and stabbed him in the chest.
Merez slumped to the ground and an EHS ambulance rushed him to the Point Fortin hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Merez’s mother, Mavis, told Newsday that she was at an Easter vigil at the Fullerton Roman Catholic Church in Cedros when her husband came into the church and told her that Merez was stabbed.
Mavis said when she got to the hospital her son was already dead. The mother of five said no one could tell her why her son and the relative were arguing.
“But that fella (relative) is always harassing people,” she added.
An autopsy is expected to be performed at the Forensic Sciences Centre tomorrow.
South homicide detectives are continuing investigations.
