In response to harassment

A TOBAGO man is currently warded at the Scarborough Regional Hospital in a critical condition after he was reportedly shot by officers attached to the Moriah Police station yesterday morning.

Official reports are that at about 6:30 am, the man was shot by the officers who were part of a team which responded to a report that he was “harassing” two female villagers at their home.

The suspect, who has a long history of mental illness, was reportedly wielding a cutlass while professing his love to the frightened mother and daughter, when the officers arrived and ordered that he drop the weapon.

The 28-year-old man reportedly advanced towards the officers in a menacing manner and was shot by several times about the body.

The wounded man was taken to the Scarborough Hospital where emergency surgery was performed.

Officers of the Moriah Police Station are continuing investigations.

Meanwhile, the body of “Swami,” a well-known figure in the Plymouth area, was found in a cave on a beach in the vicinity of the Arnos Vale Hotel on Sunday.

He had reportedly been living in the cave for the past 30 years and would produce craft for visitors of the hotel. Swami’s partly decomposed body was reportedly discovered by a villager who had gone to visit him and detected a stench from the cave. He was last seen alive about one month ago.

Officers of the Old Grange Police Station along with district medical officer visited the scene and ordered the body removed to the Scarborough mortuary.

Investigators have so far ruled out foul play.

They are also still trying to determine Swami’s true identity but believe that he was originally from Trinidad.

Old Grange police officers are continuing investigations.
