Saxophonist wins talented teen contest
The audience was served a feast of entertainment from the 14- to 18-year-olds who displayed their skills in dance, gospel, steelpan, calypso, saxophone and monologue.
The contestants all gave very good performances, however, the judges’ nod went to Stein Ramkaran, a saxophonist from Presentation College, San Fernando. He won $15,000, a scholarship grant plus the Mark Rattan Trophy for best instrumentalist and two round trip tickets to North America courtesy BWIA.
The second prize of $7,000 went to Ternielle Herbert of St Francois Girls College, Belmont, who rendered a monologue, while the third prize of $5,000 went to Khion De Las, a pannist from Presentation College, San Fernando.
Top performances also came from guests artistes Tahira Osborne — the 2005 winner, Verleyne Andrews, violinist and the Expression Dance Workshop. MC Errol Fabien also shared a wonderful rapport with the crowd.
The well-choreographed competition was held under the distinguished patronage of President George Maxwell Richards and Dr Jean Ramjohn Richards.
Judges were Maxine Attong, Eric Butler, Esther Batson and Charmaine Thomas.
