TTUTA calls for Community Police

Last week classes at the Bethlehem Boys’ RC, Bethlehem Girls’ RC and Piccadilly Government Primary School were suspended when rival gangs engaged in a shootout in the vicinity of the schools. Two police officers of the Besson Street Station were injured in the incident and windows of the Riverside Plaza were shattered.

Classes at Brighton Anglican Primary School, La Brea also ended abrubtly on Wednesday after two gunmen ran into the schoolyard, trampling children and threating to shoot a half-naked young man.

Permell told Sunday Newsday, TTUTA was “shocked” that such an incident could occur in a school during school hours and called on the various communities in society to make every school “a community school.” TTUTA’s general council has carded an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the matter further.
