Drillers score Supligen upset
It was Shak Attack’s first match of the zone’s 17th season, while Drillers warmed up two weeks ago with a commanding victory over TUCO Macoya Forum. The match was billed as an even contest with both teams sporting some of the best talent in the country in all five positions of the game.
Shak Attack led 23-15 after the first quarter and 43-39 at the half-way stage.
In the third quarter, several players were caught in an off-court scuffle after the ball went out of play at the base-line at the northern-end of the court. The referees ejected Jason Cadiz of Drillers who was having a good game. He scored nine points before his departure.
Other players from both teams were penalised with fouls for their involvement in the incident.
But before the quarter ended Drillers lost guard Gershwin Duncan, who picked up his fifth foul. The quarter closed with Drillers leading 57-55.
In the fourth and final quarter the excitement on the court unfolded when forward Ako Pascall entered the game and burned Shak Attack’s defence with his dribbling skills as he scored 14 of his 20 points.
But at the other end, Shak Attack’s forward Kirt Christian was in his usual scoring mood with 17 points before he was fouled out with 2:13 to go. In fact, Shak Attack also lost forward Virgil Frazer and centre David Farmer, who was playing his first match for the club after transferring from TT Elite. Although Shak Attack outscored Drillers 24-18 the work done in the first eight minutes of the session was enough to secure the team’s second victory in as many matches.
The zone’s 17th season started on April 30 with 17 clubs. Competition is in the First and Second Division (Men) and Women.
Matches are played on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
