Dookeran: Preserve the Indian legacy
UNC political leader Winston Dookeran, the first Indo-Trinidadian Central Bank Governor, underscored this point in his message at a special luncheon he hosted for senior citizens at the Daawat Indian Restaurant in Chaguanas last Wednesday.
Dookeran said, “Our thrust now must be, through the beginning of a new national conversation, on how we plan our future and the will to involve ourselves in a process of change which, ironically, will be the only way to preserve our way of life and place in society. Out of sadness and worry, mixed with hopes and dreams, we are gathered here today as a free people, a strong people.” He said tribute must be paid to the elderly for their legacy to the younger generation.
“Our forefathers gave us courage and a sense of commitment and bravery to join with others in the process of nation building. Our senior citizens, therefore, must be given special consideration for the legacy that they have given us.”
And for their contribution, the elderly must have access to the economic fortunes of the country, Dookeran said.
