Ramesh: People determine my future

The former attorney general also revealed yesterday that efforts were proceeding apace to have US civil rights activist and former presidential candidate Rev Jesse Jackson address a human rights rally in Freeport on Sunday.

Reiterating that his priority at this time was “to work the ground” in order to help the UNC win the next general elections, Maharaj told Newsday that only “the voice of the people” and not the dictates of the party’s hierarchy would determine the role he plays in the UNC.

Stating that he has not been offered a party post, senatorial appointment or considered what role he could play in another UNC government, Maharaj said the ground level was where the true power of the UNC resided and that was where he wanted to concentrate his efforts at this time.

The former AG said he did not rejoin the UNC to remain in Opposition and would be active in all of the 41 constituencies up for grabs in 2007. Asked if the UNC was ready to face general elections, early or otherwise, Maharaj said the party’s machinery has the potential to achieve victory at the polls but there was still a lot of work to do. “The party has to do lots of innovations,” he said.
