Karate championships

The competition starts at 10 am and ends at 7 pm. Along with several TT martial arts teams which will be participating, regional squads from Barbados, Guyana and St Lucia have confirmed their participation in the tournament.

Martial artists from the USA, Canada, Britain, Nigeria and India have also been invited to the championships. Tiger Claw Karate School students from several Port-of-Spain primary schools will also be taking part in the competition. These hail from the Sacred Heart Girls’ RC School, Sacred Heart Boys’ RC School, Newtown Boys’ RC School, the St John’s Girls’ RC School and Marshall’s After School Homework Centre.

The contest begins with the black belts competing in the Team and Weapon Kata divisions and the Breaking and Self-Defence competitions.

These will be followed by the children’s categories from five years and under. At the Tiger Claw Digicel Open Karate Championships, there are three black belt divisions, the 12 and under division, the junior black belt 13 - 17 division and the adult 18 and up black belt division.

From June 29 to July 12, a Tiger Claw squad will be representing TT at two prestigious international Karate tournaments — the US Open Karate Championships on June 30 in Orlando, Florida and the True Force Global International Karate Championships in Texas.
