Prisons Officer on $125,000 bail

Terrell Logan of Quarry Road, Morne Diablo, appeared before Magistrate Lianne Lee Kim in the Port-of-Spain Fourth Magistrates’ Court charged with trafficking 684 grammes of marijuana outside the State Prison. In court yesterday, he was represented by attorney Keith Scotland. The court prosecutor Sgt Roodal Harrilal, produced the marijuana, a Nokia cell phone, 36 cigarettes and two cigarette lighters, which he said were allegedly seized by the police from the accused.

Scotland, in an application for bail, said Logan lived all his life in Morne Diablo. He said Logan was married and the father of three children — aged seven, four and one-and-a-half. He said Logan was no flight risk and he intends to deny the charge. Scotland said his client has no previous convictions and has been a prisons officer for the past six years. “He has spent a night in jail, but you would say that he has spent many nights in jail. He spent the night in jail as a prisoner, he heard the clanging of the prison gates.”

Sgt Harrilal said although Logan was no flight risk, the court must order that his passport be seized. He said it was while the prisons officer was trusted with the keys, he allegedly committed the offence.

But Lee Kim said she was going to grant bail to Logan. She granted him bail in the sum of $125,000 with a surety and ordered that he surrender his passport to the court. He was also ordered to visit the Penal Police Station on Tuesdays and Fridays between 5 pm and 9 pm.

Hearing was adjourned to June 12.
