Germany, a pleasant surprise
I refer to your article in the June 1, 2006 Newsday, with the heading “German race hate rising.”
Firstly, my son and I who are not Germans nor white lived in Germany for 14 years. During that period of time we had always felt safe, secure, protected and never once discriminated against because of our race or colour.
German people are quite reserved which may be misinterpreted for snotty. They are organised, disciplined and hardworking people who take pride in themselves and their country. Therefore, on arrival in Germany you will notice that everything around you is clean and well kept.
You will find garbage bins on buses, trains, on the sidewalks and in all public places. The buses and trains are modern and punctual which comes from having true vision, proper planning and real discipline.
About the German Police Force, they are well educated, qualified, serious and no nonsense individuals that work with up-to-date technology and equipment.
However, ignorance of the law is not an excuse. Therefore, my advice to anyone visiting Germany would be, please educate yourself about any problem areas and stay away from these places.
The German authorities are fully aware that approximately 4,000 skinheads in a population of 80 million exist and they have taken all measures possible to ensure the safety and well being of all visitors coming to Germany for the World Cup. As a result, I am sure that those travelling to witness these matches will find the Germans and Germany to be a pleasant surprise.
I know that I did.
