No time off for Paraguay game
Ministry officials yesterday told Newsday the Soca Warriors’ games against Sweden and England both fall on days when schools will be closed.
The first game will be played on Saturday and the second is scheduled for the Corpus Christi holiday. According to officials, since the third game, scheduled for Tuesday June 20 at 3 pm, would not be played during school hours, time off to see the game would not be considered.
One official said individual schools may make arrangements for staff and students to wear the national colours on game Tuesday to support the TT team, or install television sets at strategic locations on school compounds for the game between TT and Sweden.
Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA) president Clyde Permell told Newsday TTUTA is in a time-consuming battle with the Government over Governments’ plan to move technical institutes and teachers’ colleges to the University of Trinidad and Tobago.
As a result, he said, the union did not have the time to discuss how schools would show support for the Soca Warriors during the games.
He said the union may consider some activities and announce them later in the week.
