St Mary’s whip game Chaguanas b-ballers
It was the feature match of a double-header with both teams seeking their first win of the tournament.
However, it was Chaguanas who took the game to their opponents as the central Trinidad school held a 15-13 first quarter lead which they increased to four points at half-time - 34-30.
But in the third quarter St Mary’s got into their rhythm and with a tight man-to-man pressure defence, St Mary’s scored 22 third-quarter points.
Sandy helped himself to 19 second-half points in his game-high 31 and Edwards scored 11 of his 20 to guide The Saints to their first win in two matches.
Chaguanas however showed a never-say-die approach even when they trailed by as many as 15 points with six minutes to go.
Jumar Lucas and Christopher Ralph both scored 14 points, for Chaguanas who are yet to score a victory in their three-match campaign so far.
In girls’ action also yesterday, Joelisa Cooper continued her scoring spree when she sank a tournament-best 54 points in Morvant/Laventille’s 69-39 victory over San Juan Senior Comprehensive.
The first quarter was the most competitive but by half-time Morvant/Laventille pulled away by 13 points - 26-13 and never looked back.
Cooper scored 34 of her points in the second half to guide her school to their second win in as many matches, while for San Juan’s it was their second defeat in their two-match group campaign.
Guard Trimaine Ganteaume was San Juan’s standout for her ball-handling and scoring skills.
