‘New’ party formed

It was launched yesterday as an amalgam of three political parties — the Democratic National Assembly (DNA), National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR), and Democratic Party of Trinidad and Tobago (DPTT), with the blessing of the Grassroots Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago. The launch occurred at a media conference at Crowne Plaza. Chairing the event, St Joseph MP Gerald Yetming said he was impressed with the constitution of the original Democratic National Assembly, which was presumably inherited by the Democratic National Alliance, which he said would let people truly participate in governance and give hope to the citizenry for a viable alternative to the ruling PNM.

Yetming explained the evolution of the new DNA, saying it had involved each party surrendering its individual indentity.

Dr Kirk Meighoo, leading light of the original DNA, said he hoped this offspring organisation would last 100 years. Weaving together the strands of the new entity, he said: “We are all now one, and no longer separate organisations.”
