Transparency Institute:

THE Trinidad and Tobago Transparency Institute yesterday congratulated Government for ratifying the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) but said much more needed to be done to combat corruption in TT.

In a statement yesterday, institute chairman Reginald Dumas said his group was pleased to hear Attorney-General John Jeremie’s recent announcement that TT had ratified UNCAC.

TT had signed this Convention in December 2003 and it came into effect last December.

UNCAC allows global judicial action against corruption and provides a framework for domestic anti-corruption legislation including whistle-blower protection and effective public sector accountability systems.

Noting Jeremie’s undertaking of Government’s determination to fulfill all its obligations under UNCAC, Dumas expressed his hope that Government would do so and it stood ready to assist in whatever way it could.
