Seminar for CAPE and CXC Teachers

This seminar will provide an opportunity for CXC and CAPE (Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination) Science teachers — in the areas of Environmental Sciences, Geography, Biology and Chemistry - to become aware of the relevant work of, and assistance available from The Cropper Foundation; and to initiate dialogue and interaction between teachers and The Cropper Foundation as a basis for establishing an ongoing system of support for teachers under the Foundation’s Programme in Environment and Resource Education (IERE).

IERE was launched last October with the completion of an Assessment of the Northern Range — a three-year project undertaken by The Cropper Foundation in collaboration with The University of the West Indies, the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), The Tropical ReLeaf Foundation and The Trust for Sustainable Livelihoods. The report of this assessment, published as the EMA’s State of the Environment Report 2004, outlines:

- The resources (or services) provided by the Northern Range, and how these are linked to human well-being.

- The factors which have been impacting on these services and the changes occurring within the Northern Range as a result.

- The effectiveness of past and current responses (or policies and actions) to Northern Range degradation;

- Several options and recommendations relating to what might be done to better manage the resources of the Northern Range ecosystem were presented.

This assessment, along with a similar assessment of the Caribbean Sea - led by The Cropper Foundation and the University of the West Indies - as well as the recently completed global Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (www.millenniumassessment.org) provide a basis upon which several resource materials for teaching can be produced.
