‘Dead’ man flees from abductors

A 28-YEAR-OLD Cunupia man who was abducted last Friday, managed to escape his captors by pretending to be dead. Ricardo Marcano told Newsday he crawled out of an abandoned house in Brazil Village, Cumuto where he was kept and alerted the driver of a passing car.

The driver contacted the police who took Marcano to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) in Mt Hope for treatment. Doctors discovered Marcano had sustained several broken bones and numerous cuts to his head during the abduction ordeal.

After being treated and kept overnight, Marcano was sent home the day after. In an interview with Newsday at his Las Lomas home yesterday, Marcano said about 4.30 pm last Friday, he was liming at a bar at Madras Road in Cunupia when he was snatched by three men and dragged into a car.

He was taken to an abandoned house at Brazil Village where the three men beat him on the leg and head with a piece of iron. He was also struck with a large stone. The men told Marcano they were going to kill him and in his quest to survive, Marcano managed to fool them into believing that he had succumbed to the beating.

On seeing Marcano slumped and motionless on the ground, his abductors panicked and fled the house, leaving him to make his escape. Marcano crawled from the house to the deserted road and waited until he saw an approaching car. At about 7.15 pm, he stopped a passing car and the driver contacted the police.

Yesterday, Cunupia police officers recorded a statement on the incident from Marcano who furnished the officers with descriptions of the abductors. However, up to late yesterday, no arrests had been made.

Grimacing in pain, Marcano said he felt his abduction stemmed from an argument he had with a man last Thursday. Marcano claimed a man came into a bar where he (Marcano) was liming and was trying to sell patrons illegal drugs. When he challenged the man, Marcano said his life was threatened.

He added that the abduction ordeal has left him living in fear for his life and is begging the police to move swiftly and make arrests. Police sources said investigations are continuing.
